 PRODUCTS

Equi-tread Crumb Rubber Mulch Arena Footing is a clean, safe, resilient material that absorbs impact and even helps cushion rider falls. It is composed of small, irregularly shaped pieces of clean granulated rubber. Equi-tread rubber mulch is made entirely of recycled rubber from tires. Equi-tread rubber mulch makes a difference: in a hardness study of arena surfaces, the addition of rubber was found to make the surface much more forgiving than an all sand arena. This resilient surface translates in less shock and fewer injuries to horses' tendons and joints allowing for increased training time.  Horses were found to be less fatigued after crumb rubber was added to their sand arena. Equi-tread rubber mulch can be used indoors or out in arenas, jumping stadiums, tracks and trails. An ideal footing should provide good traction, sufficient cushioning to absorb shock, and be non-irritating to both horse and rider.  Equi-tread rubber mulch arena footing does all that and more. It minimizes the chances of injury to you and your horse. The elastic properties of Equi-tread cushion's a horses' footfalls and minimize shock, joint stress and injured tendons. Your horse will love it!

The material is light and easy to work with. It can be spread and leveled with a front-end loader or a few people with rakes and wheelbarrows. The amount needed will depend on the type and depth of your arena base. The minimum amount recommended for an all purpose arena is 1 ton per 600 square feet. One part Equi-tread, two parts sand will give you about 1 inch deep of Equi-tread. The depth of your arena footing is a personal preference and you can always add more if desired. Do not use footing over 4" it will be too soft.

Horse Arena Installation
Generally an arena sub-base should be built as close to a road base as possible. Meaning it should be close to 100 % compacted, have sufficient slope to facilitate run-off and drainage and most importantly be impervious to those grinding horse hoofs that we all know can do considerable damage. This requires several steps. Bare in mind these are only guide lines. While we would love to give you specific advise we can not. There are no two situations alike.

Step by Step Installation Instructions:

choose a site with good drainage. 1. Choose a site that drains well and if possible has a natural slope for drainage. Consider your prevailing wind and breezes. Also consider your neighbors if you need to. Dust, noise and constant activity may cause problems for others.
measure site and remove organics. 2. Measure the site and remove the organics. Grass and soil will turn to muck after a good rain. You do not want this contaminating your arena.
level and slope. 3. When you have reached a solid base such as clay. Have the area leveled and sloped to 1% grade to the lowest point. Depending on how much you have removed from the site you will need to build it back up with a compactable aggregate such as pit run. This is an inexpensive way to build your subsurface back up to ground level.
add road crush or limestone screenings. 4. Next you will add 3/8" road crush or limestone screenings. This layer will take a beating from your horses hooves. This need to be as close to 100% compacted as possible. Sloped to 1% and laser leveled. Depending on the traffic in your arena the road crush should be approximately 4-6" It may also be called stone dust. Check with your local quarry. There are many different names for similar aggregates. You do not want this layer to break up and render your footing too deep.
Ready for Equi-tread. 5. You are now ready for Equi-tread. Many of our customers are mixing Equi-tread with washed concrete sand or masons sand with good results. These products have minimal fines and will not break down as quickly when mixed with Equi-tread.
apply Equi-tread 6. Apply Equi-tread to the raked sand. You can mix this in as you go or let the horses do the work. Note the round pen has a 2x6 surround, this helps keep your sand and  rubber in place.
Enjoy! 7. Enjoy a safe and resilient footing for years to come.
