Equi-tread Arena Surface
(Canadian Horseman, July/August 1997, p.44)

Not only is it great for your horse, but Equi-tread, a new arena surface material, is also great for the environment. Now available throughout Canada. Equi-tread is a high-tech crumb, rubber surfacing material. Because of its shock-absorbing qualities, horses' legs are cushioned, reducing stress injuries and lamenesses. Equi-tread also resists compacting, virtually eliminating the need for dragging. During the winter, its muted colour and insulating qualities retain warmth, reducing frost. It does not get slippery when wet and won't rot or decompose like organic material.

On the environmental side, Equi-tread is made entirely of recycled rubber from tires that would have been sent to landfills or burned. And, Equi-tread crumb rubber does not leach chemicals into the soil. It is safe, clean, easy to maintain and dust-free.

As a gesture of goodwill, Equi-tread recently donated 24,000 pounds of crumb rubber material to the Courtenay Fairgrounds, home of the Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society, as well as several other riding clubs and organizations. The CVTRS reported that both humans and horses experienced a reduction of stress on back and legs on this surface - very important in therapeutic riding, as both volunteers and horses walk for long periods of time in the arena.
